Reviewed: Noctua Redux

Our review samples included the following:

  • NF-P14s Redux – PWM
  • NF-P14r Redux – PWM
  • NF-S12B Redux – PWM
  • NF-B9 Redux – PWM
  • NF-R8 – PWM

So all fans were PWM models which meant that we were able to run them on our ASUS Maximus VI Gene test bench with the ASUS Fan Xpert 2 software to control the speed both manually and as per an automatic ‘standard’ temperature target curve.

The specifications for comparison are below.

As you can see above, the accessories are limited to 4 mounting screws and the fans themselves have the same specifications as the originals despite the more aesthetically pleasing grey colour scheme.

The packaging is much more plain than the Premium range but still better than some similarly priced competing offerings – the box offers good protection for shipping and has the key stats of the product on the outside.

I had a pre-loved original NF-P14r and NF-S12B for comparison to the new Redux models. Acoustics, airflow (as best as I could tell), cable length and dimensions were the same. The differences were simply the colour of the plastic and the Redux has a slightly better heat shrink and 4 pin header on the cable.

Although these lack the recent Noctua design improvements such as SSO2 bearing technology, AAO Frames, improved blade profiles and anti vibration pads, we need to remember that the Redux range was proven and respected during it’s extended reign as ‘Premium’ until a couple of years ago.

When testing these fans, the 140mm NF-P14r and P14s were the loudest at full tilt, registering around 25dB(A) with the others inaudible inside a case over other components like hard drives, the power supply fan or a fully wound up graphics card cooler. On an open test bench, we really had to get close to the fans to pick them out over the ambient room noise. These are a great option for the a quiet freak on a budget.

It’s also great to see the 6 year warranty still included.
